Sigma Chi Fantasy Baseball League 2010

March 1, 2010

If you read this blog then you know we create Sigma Chi fantasy leagues for various sports. The goal is to allow Sigs who may have never met each other to engage and meet new brothers. We just created another league for fantasy baseball. Its a “head to head” league that allows for 12 teams max. The rules are the Yahoo default settings, but we can change them if people want. When this league fills up (it did last year) then we’ll get another league created. We will help bring together Sigs who didn’t get to join the first league so they can create another league for themselves.

The league is available for any Sigma Chi active, alum or pledge. Feel free to pass the info along to other Sigs.

ShareSigmaChi.com – Oldest living former MLB player

June 23, 2008

Billy Werber, Duke 1930, the oldest living former Major League Baseball player and Duke’s first All-American basketball player, turned 100 years old on June 20, 2008. He spent two seasons playing alongside Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Werber is the final surviving teammate of both Ruth and Gehrig.

  • “In my first game, (as a Yankee) i got on base ahead of Babe Ruth ,” “He hit a home run and I ran around the bases, full speed, because i wanted to show those Yankees how fast i could run. When Ruth came in he patted me on the head and said “You don’t have to run like that when the Babe hits one”.
  • In his first National League season, Werber became the first player ever to bat on television during a game between Cincinnati and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field (August 26, 1939).
  • He no longer watches baseball; one of his stated reasons is that he was dismayed to see Johnny Damon’s long hair and beard.
